Exhibition organized to commemorate the Bicentennial.
In 1910, to celebrate the centennial of the May Revolution that started the process of independence of our country, Argentina had managed to become one of the richest and most developed nations. Great works transformed the city of Buenos Aires as the Port, public buildings, the Avenida de Mayo, businesses and department stores, private residences, health etc works. For the celebrations were produced, among other things, mates commemorative image of the Republic or the National Emblem.
In this presentation, different mate porcelain that were used at the time of the Centennial and other years are exhibited, showing the importance of this custom in Argentina.
On the yerba mate
The yerba mate, which is a leafy tree, was used by the inhabitants of these lands before the Spanish arrived. Scientifically it is known by the name of Ilex paraguayensis and grows in subtropical South America sector for the territories of Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and southern Brazil.
Consumption of this product is spread in these countries that adopted this drink not only for its nutritional qualities but also for its special flavor, which seems strange to those who tested for the first time, but that habit becomes something tasty and enjoyable.
Mate in each region has certain features that distinguish it: the addition of other aromatic herbs like lemon verbena, dried orange peels and, more generally, sugar. Is taken as breakfast or snack but any valid reason is good to prime a few mates that come in solitude or are of gathering with family and friends. It is very common to hear the phrase “I hope to have mate” as an invitation to visit relatives or acquaintances, and it is customary “Matear” after lunch, after dinner, at the picnic or beach during the summer, while traveling or, as in Uruguay, where it is taken everywhere, even walking down the street.
